Lesotho experienced a significant loss of 16,000 textile and apparel industry jobs between March 2018 and March 2024. A workshop organized by the LNDC revealed a 12.79% decline in employment in the industry, resulting in the loss of 4,740 jobs between March 2023 and March 2024.
A decrease in export markets has impacted the country’s GDP. The workshop focused on encouraging manufacturers to adopt ethical practices to regain international orders.
In March 2018, the textile sector in the country had 49,945 jobs, but by March 2024, the number had decreased to 34,151. Despite being the second largest employer after the public sector, the industry has been facing a decline in recent years. Factors such as increasing operational costs, supply chain disruptions, and financial strain have impacted the competitiveness of the textile and clothing industry.
