Policy Updates
Following last month’s overview of legislative developments in the European Union effecting the texile and fashion industry, this time we are unpacking the Ecodesign regulation.
What is the Ecodesign Regulation?
The Ecodesign regulation sets out rules and requirements established by the European Union to reduce the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle. It primarily focuses on improving the energy efficiency and overall environmental performance of various consumer goods including textiles and fashion. These regulations are designed to promote longevity in design, resource efficiency and the use of eco-friendly materials. Currently, the regulation is being deliberated in trilogues, and it is expected that the regulation will come into effect before the end of the Spanish Presidency.
How does the Ecodesign regulation impact textiles?
Ecodesign regulations have a significant impact on the textile industry as they target various aspects of textile production and consumption:
Materials: the regulation encourages the use of materials such as organic cotton, recycled fibres, and biodegradable synthetics. This promotes the reduction of harmful chemicals and waste in textile production.
Energy Efficiency: Companies are required to improve the energy efficiency of textile machinery and processes to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Durability: Products like clothing and textiles are expected to have a longer lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements and contributing to waste reduction.
Labelling: Clear and informative labelling to inform consumers about a product’s environmental impact, helping them to make conscious purchasing decisions.
