Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a striking appearance at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in a custom couture creation by Amit Aggarwal, continuing her long-standing association with one of the world’s most influential red carpets.
Titled Luminara, the couture ensemble explored the concept of light as movement, energy, and transformation, translated through sculptural construction and engineered craftsmanship. The collaboration marks another milestone in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s evolving Cannes fashion legacy, which has consistently positioned Indian couture within the global luxury fashion conversation.
Couture inspired by light and movement
The custom creation centred around Amit Aggarwal’s signature Crystal Vein embroidery technique, developed through more than 1,500 hours of hand craftsmanship. Thousands of crystalline linear embellishments were individually placed across the garment using a lattice-like structure designed to create the illusion of illuminated pathways moving across the body.
The embroidery was engineered to interact dynamically with light and motion, giving the couture piece a visually kinetic quality as it transformed under different lighting conditions.
Sculptural silhouette rooted in biomimicry
The silhouette drew inspiration from biomimicry, a recurring influence in Amit Aggarwal’s design philosophy. Structured wing-like extensions emerging from the shoulders created a sense of propulsion and movement while contouring the body with architectural precision.
Rendered in an abyss blue tone, the ensemble referenced cosmic depth and the infinite movement of light through space. Every element of the garment was designed to respond to illumination, reinforcing the conceptual narrative behind the piece.
Collaboration between fashion and cinematic presence
The look was developed in collaboration with stylist Mohit Rai, bringing together cinematic identity and couture innovation. According to Amit Aggarwal, the intention behind Luminara was to create a design that functioned less as a conventional garment and more as an “energy field” surrounding the wearer.
The collaboration further strengthens Amit Aggarwal’s position within contemporary Indian couture, where material innovation, sculptural techniques, and artisanal craftsmanship converge at the intersection of fashion, art, and technology.
A continuing Cannes legacy
Over the past two decades, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s appearances at Cannes have consistently reflected theatricality, reinvention, and individuality. Her 2026 appearance continues that narrative while spotlighting Indian couture craftsmanship on a global stage.
