On the occasion of National Handloom Day 2026, the Society for the Vocational Rehabilitation of the Retarded (SVRR) was honoured with a Token of Appreciation at the National Handloom Day 2026 National Conference, held on 10 August 2026 at the Textiles Committee Conference Hall, Mumbai.

The honour celebrates SVRR’s inspiring work in promoting handloom weaving among adults with intellectual disabilities, creating opportunities for skill development, meaningful engagement, financial independence, and lives of dignity and self-reliance.

For more than six decades, SVRR has been dedicated to empowering persons with intellectual disabilities through vocational training and livelihood opportunities. Over the years, its artisans have developed skills across various crafts, with weaving becoming an important part of their journey towards confidence, creativity, and economic participation.

A significant milestone emerged when Anveshanam Foundation identified and recognised that the weaving work carried out by SVRR’s artisans represented authentic handloom craftsmanship. This opened a new pathway for the organisation, bringing greater focus to strengthening processes, documenting practices, and aligning with quality standards. With the guidance and handholding support of Anveshanam Foundation, SVRR successfully achieved Textiles Committee Handloom Mark certification for its handloom work.

This certification was more than a formal recognition—it marked a new direction in SVRR’s six-decade journey. It affirmed that persons with intellectual disabilities can contribute meaningfully to India’s traditional crafts while meeting recognised quality standards and creating products of value, authenticity, and excellence.

At the heart of this journey is the understanding that every individual has inherent potential and deserves opportunities to learn, contribute, and be recognised. Guided by universal human values of dignity, respect, empathy, and inclusion, Anveshanam Foundation’s approach focuses not merely on creating livelihoods, but on enabling individuals to discover their capabilities and participate meaningfully in society.

The milestone also highlights the importance of collaboration in building inclusive ecosystems. By identifying potential, strengthening capacities, and connecting grassroots initiatives with established quality frameworks, Anveshanam Foundation has supported SVRR in bringing greater visibility and recognition to the skills and craftsmanship of its artisans.

Building on this experience, **Anveshanam Foundation is committed to extending its handholding and guidance support to organisations working in the area of Handlooms and upcycling. Through its experience in strengthening processes, documentation, quality alignment, and certification pathways, the Foundation aims to support more initiatives in bringing their sustainable products and practices towards formal recognition through appropriate frameworks, including the Textiles Committee Mark registration process. This effort reflects a larger vision of promoting circular craft, responsible production, and inclusive livelihoods.

The journey of SVRR and Anveshanam Foundation represents the coming together of heritage, inclusion, sustainability, and innovation. The honour received on National Handloom Day is not only a celebration of an achievement but also the beginning of new possibilities—where traditional crafts become pathways for empowerment and where every individual’s ability to create is valued and recognised.

As SVRR continues its journey forward, this milestone stands as a reminder that with the right understanding, opportunities, support, and recognition, inclusive craftsmanship can contribute meaningfully to India’s rich handloom legacy while shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future.
