Heimtextil 2027 to Showcase Functional Materials at Futures Lab
The Functional Futures Lab, curated by Future Fabrics Expo, will highlight performance materials for architecture, interior design and hospitality from 12 to 15 January 2027.
Heimtextil will introduce the Functional Futures Lab at its 2027 edition, running from 12 to 15 January in Frankfurt. The special showcase will explore how innovative materials can improve performance, comfort and durability across interiors and hospitality spaces.
Curated by Future Fabrics Expo, the exhibition will connect material innovation with design and practical applications. It will feature both experimental prototypes and commercially available solutions, while clearly indicating their stages of development.
The showcase aims to help professionals make informed material choices for architecture, interior design and hospitality projects.
Functional Materials for Future Living Spaces
The Functional Futures Lab will examine how materials can respond to changing needs in modern living and working environments. Key areas include thermal and acoustic comfort, healthier indoor spaces and materials that adapt to different uses and environmental conditions.
The exhibits will range from innovative textile fibres and dyes to durable composite materials and research-led design prototypes. They will also demonstrate how functional properties can support comfort, longevity and more adaptable interiors.
Future Fabrics Expo brings expertise in material innovation and sustainability to the initiative. Its international network connects material developers, designers and researchers.
Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt, said, “Performance is a key topic for the future of the textile industry. We see this worldwide at our events, from apparel to home and contract textiles. Together with Future Fabrics Expo, we showcase at Heimtextil what innovative materials will be capable of in the future. The Functional Futures Lab connects early-stage developments with solutions that are already available and highlights new potential applications for architecture, interior design and hospitality,”
Amanda Johnston, Chief Design Officer at Future Fabrics Expo, added, “We are delighted to partner with Heimtextil January 2027 to elevate the conversation around the future of home and interior textiles. This partnership will connect inspiration with actionable solutions and help shape a future focused, forward-looking, responsible industry,”
Helping Professionals Assess Material Readiness
The exhibition will feature materials at different stages of development, from early research prototypes to products already available on the market.
Information accompanying the exhibits will explain their functional properties and development stages using Technology Readiness Levels. This framework will help trade visitors assess how close an innovation is to practical application.
As a result, architects, interior designers and hospitality professionals can explore new options for material selection, product development and long-term planning.
The showcase also strengthens Heimtextil’s role as a platform for industry knowledge-sharing and future-focused interior solutions.
Three Themes Explore Material Innovation
The Functional Futures Lab will organise its exhibits into three colour-coded areas: Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance. Each area will group materials according to their origins, processing methods and design approaches.
The exhibition will focus on properties such as temperature responsiveness, durability, flame resistance and antibacterial effects. Circularity and core sustainability criteria will also guide material selection.
Featured innovations will include upholstery materials made from untreated wool fibres and living root systems designed to provide flame protection without toxic chemicals. Other exhibits will showcase durable bio-based composites and dyes made from food waste for textiles and wood.
Together, these examples will demonstrate how material research can support new approaches to product performance and design.
Functional Futures Lab at Heimtextil 2027
Located in Hall 4.1, the Functional Futures Lab will form the centrepiece of Heimtextil’s Interior.Architecture.Hospitality section.
Beyond the exhibits, the space will support knowledge-sharing and professional networking. Experts will present insights at the Talk Spot, while a dedicated café will provide space for discussions and new connections.
The area will also serve as a starting point for guided tours, helping visitors explore the latest developments in functional materials and interior applications.
Through the Functional Futures Lab, Heimtextil aims to connect material research with practical industry needs, giving professionals a clearer view of emerging technologies and future design opportunities.
