On the occasion of the International Day of Rural Women, VIRGIO is highlighting the contribution of rural women to the global fashion and textile ecosystem. The company is also emphasising the need for greater visibility, fair wages and economic independence for women working in traditional craft and garment production.

According to Amar Nagaram, Co-Founder & CEO, VIRGIO, rural women play an important role in preserving textile heritage and supporting garment production. However, they often remain largely invisible within traditional retail supply chains.

VIRGIO believes technology can create stronger links between rural craftsmanship and modern fashion retail. The company uses a technology-led, Made-on-Demand model that connects directly with Sedex-certified artisan clusters.

This approach aims to support responsible production while creating more consistent economic opportunities for rural women. It also seeks to strengthen the connection between traditional craftsmanship and the needs of modern fashion retail.

Amar Nagaram said:

“On International Day of Rural Women, we honor the skilled craftswomen and garment workers who are the true backbone of global fashion. For generations, rural women have held the world’s textile heritage together, yet they remain the most invisible in traditional retail supply chains. At VIRGIO, we believe that the future of fashion must empower the women who create it. By connecting our technology-led, Made-on-Demand model directly with Sedex-certified artisan clusters, we bridge the gap between rural craftsmanship and modern retail, ensuring fair wages, safe working environments, and steady, year-round economic independence. Technology shouldn’t just optimize inventory; it must serve as an equalizer that brings visibility, dignity, and economic progress to rural women across the fashion ecosystem.”

— Amar Nagaram, Co-Founder & CEO, VIRGIO

The company’s approach reflects the growing focus on technology-enabled, demand-driven and socially responsible fashion supply chains. Made-on-Demand production can help businesses respond to actual demand and reduce excess inventory. It can also create stronger connections between artisans, manufacturers and retailers.

Greater integration into organised fashion supply chains can give rural women access to more stable income and new opportunities to develop their skills. It can also support the continued contribution of rural communities to India’s rich textile and fashion heritage.

VIRGIO’s focus brings together the social and operational benefits of a Made-on-Demand model. The company aims to use technology not only to improve production and inventory management, but also to support greater visibility and economic opportunity for women across the fashion ecosystem.
