Bombay Shirt Company and Rid Burman Launch Mumbai-Inspired Collection

Bombay Shirt Company (BSC), known for its custom-made menswear, has teamed up with artist and fashion photographer Rid Burman. Together, they have launched a capsule collection titled What is the Colour of Mumbai?

The collection draws inspiration from Mumbai’s skies, coastline and architecture. It combines BSC’s structured tailoring with Burman’s artistic view of the city. As a result, the designs feature relaxed shapes, rich textures and urban details.

Mumbai Inspires the Collection

The collaboration began with four original photographs taken by Burman. These images capture pre-monsoon skies, dark ocean waters at dusk and weathered coastal buildings.

Instead of simply printing the photographs onto garments, the team used them to guide fabric selection and colour development. They also tested dye washes and explored new silhouettes. This approach helped translate Mumbai’s visual character into clothing.

“The best collaborations force you to see something familiar through an entirely new lens,” says Akshay Narvekar, Founder of Bombay Shirt Company.

He explains that Burman’s photographs encouraged the brand to move beyond its usual design choices. Consequently, the collection includes more workwear, wider proportions, chore jackets and oversized T-shirts. It also features distressed finishes and textured fabrics.

Relaxed Silhouettes and Urban Details

The What is the Colour of Mumbai? collection features contemporary ready-to-wear styles. Key pieces include structured chore jackets, vintage-washed denim shackets and soft overshirts.

For bottoms, the range offers barrel-fit jeans and military-inspired barrel fatigue pants. Meanwhile, heavyweight acid-washed hoodies and oversized T-shirts add to its relaxed look.

The garments feature subtle embroidery, distressed finishes and Burman’s photographic work. In addition, caps and tote bags complete the collection.

Burman explains that colour has helped him build a sense of belonging in Mumbai. He often sees the city’s evening sky turn moody grey before the monsoon. However, when golden dusk light reflects on dark waters, the view becomes striking.

The collaboration also reflects Mumbai’s everyday life. Burman’s street photography captures real people and the city’s constant movement. Together, his visual approach and BSC’s tailoring bring the collection’s themes of grit, emotion and resilience to life.

A Colour Palette Inspired by Mumbai

The collection’s colour palette reflects Mumbai’s changing skyline from day to night. Deep shades such as Moonless Night, Mystic Navy, Sky View and Eclipse form the base of the range.

Meanwhile, softer shades add contrast. These include Silver Grey, Burnished Lilac, Cloud Dancer, Dusty Blue and Dusty Pink. Sunlight and Sunburst bring warmer tones to the collection. Together, these colours reflect the city’s varied atmosphere and changing light.

Where to Find the Collection

The What is the Colour of Mumbai? capsule collection is available through Bombay Shirt Company’s online store and selected retail outlets.

In Mumbai, shoppers can find it at Kala Ghoda, Kemps Corner, Pali Hill, Juhu and Andheri. The collection is also available at Khan Market, Vasant Kunj and South Extension in Delhi-NCR.

Other locations include Indiranagar in Bengaluru, Shakespeare Sarani in Kolkata, Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Chennai, Sindhu Bhavan Marg in Ahmedabad and Koregaon Park in Pune.
