Zurich-based label NEUMÜHLE has introduced its Circular Mono Hoodie, an everyday garment built around a single-material concept. The hoodie uses cotton throughout, including the sewing thread.
The design contains no elastane. Therefore, the construction avoids adding a second fibre type and considers potential recycling from the product development stage.
The Limited Drop costs CHF 139 and connects with NEUMÜHLE’s existing take-back initiative and recycling partnerships.
One Material, Down to Every Detail
The Mono Hoodie uses 100% organic cotton. Its cotton sewing thread also carries Cradle to Cradle Certified® certification.
By eliminating elastane, NEUMÜHLE keeps the garment’s material composition more consistent. This approach can help reduce some of the complexities associated with recycling blended textiles.
The hoodie combines a soft, heavyweight fabric with clean lines. A subtle NEUMÜHLE logo completes the minimalist design.
Why Monomaterial Design Matters
Material selection plays an increasingly important role in textile recycling. Monomaterial construction can make it easier to identify and process textile materials at the end of their useful life.
A 2026 study by Wageningen University & Research found that 61% of discarded textiles in the Dutch clothing system examined consisted of material blends. The researchers concluded that monomaterial designs, or components that manufacturers can easily separate, offer better conditions for efficient, high-quality textile-to-textile recycling.
Similarly, Empa has highlighted the challenges that material blends can create during recycling. The organisation also stresses the importance of understanding textile composition and quality.
These findings support the thinking behind NEUMÜHLE’s approach. The label considers potential end-of-life pathways while selecting materials during product development.
Take-Back and Recycling Partnerships
NEUMÜHLE works with several recycling partners to support its circular approach. The label collects returned materials, consolidates them and then sends them into its recycling partnerships.
Customers who return a Mono Hoodie receive a 20% voucher towards their next purchase.
As a result, the initiative connects product design with a potential future material stream. It also encourages customers to return garments instead of treating them as conventional waste.
“We are rethinking clothing. It should be worn for years, bring joy and eventually return to a material stream. That is why we consider the end of a garment’s life right from the design stage – and work backwards from there,” says Andreas Fehr, co-founder of NEUMÜHLE.
NEUMÜHLE Expands Its Mono Series
The Circular Mono Hoodie builds on NEUMÜHLE’s existing Mono Vest and Mono Shirt. The Mono Vest received the German Federal Ecodesign Award in 2023.
With the new hoodie, the label extends its single-material approach to another everyday wardrobe essential. At the same time, the collection combines minimalist design with a focus on long-term use and potential future recycling.
