Parvathi Nayar’s The Primordial opened to a strong and engaged response at Muziris Contemporary in March 2026. The solo exhibition, unveiled on March 12 at the gallery’s Colaba space, marks Nayar’s first solo presentation in Mumbai in nearly twenty years, drawing a discerning audience of collectors, curators, artists, and members of the cultural community.

The opening evening witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, highlighting keen interest in Nayar’s multidisciplinary practice as well as the gallery’s curatorial direction. The exhibition also signifies a key moment for Muziris Contemporary as it formally begins representing the artist.

Featuring works spanning the past decade along with new additions from the acclaimed Pepper Series, originally presented at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014, the show presents a comprehensive view of Nayar’s evolving visual language. Her detailed graphite works and multimedia pieces stood out for their precision, depth, and layered conceptual approach.

The gallery further extended the engagement with an artist presentation and film screening on March 15, offering audiences a more intimate understanding of her practice. The session encouraged meaningful dialogue, aligning with the exhibition’s exploration of ecology, perception, and the origins of life.

Inspired by the concept of the ‘primordial soup,’ the exhibition navigates the intersection of science and mythology, prompting reflection on the fundamental forces shaping existence. Nayar continues to engage with themes of sustainability, climate change, and ecological interconnectivity, often referencing motifs such as oceans, cellular forms, and natural systems.

Speaking about the exhibition, Parvathi Nayar shared:
“The line I tread is between structure and dissolution, between conscious construction and something more intuitive. I am interested in that fragile moment when perception has not yet solidified into explanation when one is suspended between recognition and wonder.”

Joe Cyril, Founder and Gallery Director, Muziris Contemporary, added:
“It has been incredibly rewarding to witness the response to Parvathi’s work in Mumbai. The exhibition brings together different phases of her practice, and the audience engagement has reaffirmed our belief in presenting nuanced, research-driven artistic voices.”

With spaces in Mumbai and Fort Kochi-Mattancherry, Muziris Contemporary continues to support both emerging and established artists, encouraging dialogue around contemporary practices rooted in cultural histories and evolving narratives.

The Primordial remains on view at the Colaba gallery, offering visitors continued access to one of India’s most compelling contemporary artistic voices.
