Crystal & HKPC Pioneer Graphene Tech for Thermal Clothing

Crystal International Group Limited (“Crystal International” or the “Group”) is advancing innovation in textile technology through its collaboration with the Hong Kong Productivity Council (“HKPC”). This joint project, supported by funding from the Innovation and Technology Commission, applies reduced graphene oxide (“r-GO”) electrothermal technology to thermal clothing, marking a significant leap in smart textiles.

With HKPC’s nearly 20 years of expertise in nanomaterials, the project has optimized r-GO composite coatings for improved conductivity and heat efficiency. Using a precision smart-screen-printing system, the additive is seamlessly integrated into garments—enhancing electrothermal performance while reducing production costs. This innovation paves the way for a new generation of thermal apparel that improves productivity, reduces resource consumption, and strengthens Hong Kong’s competitiveness in global markets.

Since 2021, Crystal International’s knits division has co-funded and provided technical expertise for the development of multifunctional fabrics with graphene coatings, in partnership with HKPC and The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (“HKRITA”). The Group also obtained a utility model patent in China after successful development.

In 2023, the project entered its second phase under the Public Sector Trial Scheme led by HKPC, focusing on finished garment production. Electrothermal prototypes were trialed in elderly care homes, including Tung Wah Group of Hospitals’ Wong Cho Tong Day Care Centre. Tested for durability, safety, and comfort, the garments quickly reached 30°C within two minutes, with elderly users rating them 8.3 out of 9 for heating uniformity, ease of use, and overall satisfaction.

The r-GO composite fabric also holds potential for wider applications, including heating insoles and therapeutic bandages. Crystal International continues to explore commercialization opportunities while working with industry partners to drive innovation in functional and sustainable textiles.
