Athleisure has been for as long as sports have, despite the fact that fashion trends come and go. Personally, we’re eager to put Y2K behind us forever. Although the style is primarily casual and comfy, high fashion has recently absorbed and altered it in a variety of ways. We followed the trend from 2016—the year the Fenty x Puma collaboration was released—to the present.

See below for the evolution of athleisure from 2016 to today.

2022

Whether they are from the Gucci, Balenciaga, or Wales Bonner collaborations, Adidas stripes will be the hottest to own in 2022.

2019

2019 saw the emergence of basketball shorts as a breezy must-have on and off the runways.

2018

With the World Cup in action, designers like Martine Rose and Koché’sChristelle Kocher made the most of it, adding on-pitch elements to their runway collections. Street stylers followed suit.

2017

This was a big year for headbands à la David Beckham.

2016 Street stylers channeled their inner Rihannas back in 2016, pairing oversized hoodies with trendy knee-highs.
