Over 50.17 lakh workers in Bangladesh’s textile manufacturers are women, making up 55.57 percent of the workforce, as state minister for labour and employment Nazrul Islam Chowdhury recently told parliament.

52.28 percent of the 3.3 million workers in clothing manufacturers connected to the trade association are female, according to data from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

The minister was quoted in domestic media sources citing statistics from the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) showing that 62% of the 1.7 million workers in the knitwear business are women.

Yet, 43.16 lakh people were employed in the industry according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics’ 2022 Labour Force Survey, with 37.51% of those workers being women.
