Designer of sustainable apparel Mara Hoffman is closing her New York-based business. Hoffman stated that, following 24 years, “it is time to pause for breath” in an Instagram post for the company. The brand’s final collection will debut in the spring of 2024.
Hoffman acknowledged that she has been “fighting for what feels like a long time to make this vision and model work in an industry that I believe deep down in its heart wants to heal and become better,” citing the challenges of running a sustainable fashion line in the market. Ultimately though, its design is antiquated and did not take Earth and its people into consideration when it was constructed.
Since 2015, the brand’s mission has been to develop and function within a sustainable framework. Offering cutting-edge manufacturing and design techniques, choosing fabrics and materials sensibly, and increasing contributions to and involvement in social justice movements were all part of this framework.
Ms. Hoffman, a 2000 graduate of the Parsons School of Design, established her brand intending to energize and motivate via vivid hues, eye-catching patterns, and striking designs. After fifteen years, the brand announced that it was changing to a more sustainable fashion cycle, saying, “We are deeply aware of the paradoxes that exist as an apparel company speaking about sustainability, which is why our definition of the term is about a framework within which our goals and objectives can evolve.”
“My work is not finished yet,” Ms. Hoffman added in her message. “I am excited to take a quick nap and then accept lovely invitations into my life.”
