FIT’s yearly Future of Fashion Runway Show, presented by Macy’s, took place at The Glasshouse in New York City. The NYPD and pro-Palestine demonstrators were in groups outside the venue, which was unusual for an independent event space but not unheard of at New York universities these days.
Attendees were treated to 82 runway designs from 73 students enrolled in the BFA degree in fashion design for 2024, all set against the stunning backdrop of the East River. The organization represented twenty countries, twenty-one US states, and four continents.
Another recipient of the Critic Award Stephanie Her kid’s clothes combined traditional design elements with whimsical fun. A shimmering tulle dress was paired with a dusty pink coat adorned with beads, and a flat hat topped off the head with a bow. In the meantime, Mai Nanao found a new approach to share her intriguing research into many traditional African hairstyles, such as braids, cornrows, and dreadlocks.
Carolyn Murphy, an activist and fellow supermodel, hosted the event. Mara Hoffman, the design company’s founder; Fern Mallis, a businesswoman, philanthropist, and Seventh on 6th inventor; Ken Downing, Halston’s creative director; and activist and model Amber Valletta were among those present at the dinner.
Though Kamali’s career was marked by many noteworthy moments, such as the invention of the sleeping bag coat in 1973, the iconic red swimsuit worn by Farrah Fawcett, the defining Flashdance look worn by Jennifer Beals, and Grace Jones’s gold New Year’s Eve ensemble for Studio 54, these may seem insignificant in comparison to Kamali’s plans.
